Watch: Competition Ramps Up As Bears Don Pads
Chicago’s biggest camp battles are at three of their weakest positions from last season: wide receiver, offensive line, and the defensive backfield. Head coach Matt Eberflus is looking for speed and physicality from his team, and he’s on record as saying that once the pads come on, things tend to sort themselves out.
“When you get the pads on, now you can really see [that] guys will either rise or they’ll fall a little bit based on the pads. I’ve seen it every year,” Eberflus said earlier this week. “So we’re looking for that. We’re looking for guys that can play with leverage, play with the pads on, and the guys that are physical because we covet the guys that are physical, that want to play the style we want to play.”
It appears Equanimeous St. Brown has separated himself from the field as WR2. The Bears are expecting big things from the former Packer. On the offensive line, rookie Braxton Jones continues to run with the starters. He’s been the team’s No. 1 left tackle since minicamp. In a surprise move, Riley Reiff has transitioned to right tackle, where he is competing with Larry Borom. Kyler Gordon and Jaquan Brisker have been outstanding playmakers in the secondary, Jaylon Johnson has been almost unbeatable, and Eddie Jackson is having a strong camp, too.
