Chicago Bears Score and Recap (Week 11): Packers 20, Bears 19 – Green Bay Field Goal Block Seals Victory
The Bears were hoping to turn things around against the rival Packers after losing three in a row and going through a ton of behind-the-scenes drama the last two weeks. The offense looked much sharper under new coordinator Thomas Brown but a dramatic rally by quarterback Caleb Williams fell just short when Green Bay blocked a potential game-winning field goal.
Jordan Love put the Packers ahead on the opening drive with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Jayden Reed. The Bears responded with a field goal on their opening series to cut the deficit to 7-3. Green Bay got the ball into the red zone in the second quarter but Love was intercepted by Terell Smith in the end zone to kill the scoring chance.
Chicago took that turnover and moved it down the field to set up a 1-yard Roschon Johnson touchdown, the Bears first in their last 25 possessions, to give the home team a 10-7 lead with just seconds left in the half. Cairo Santos kicked a second field goal to begin the third quarter and increased the advantage to 13-7.
The Packers responded with a touchdown of their own on 8-yard run by tailback Josh Jacobs to go back on top 14-13. Chicago got a rare explosive play on offense to go back on top when RB D’Andre Swift busted a 39-yard touchdown run. A two-point conversion play was unsuccessful so the score was 19-14.
The Bears attempted to protect their narrow lead but Green Bay finally broke through with about three minutes left in the game after Christian Watson hauled in a 60-yard pass and Love punched in a quarterback sneak to give the road team a 20-19 edge. Williams responded hitting a series of passes to get Chicago inside the Packers 30 yard line with under a minute to go.
Santos lined up for a 46-yard field goal to win the game with three seconds left but Green Bay blocked the kick to hand Chicago a heartbreaking loss. (Box score)
Why the Bears Lost
The defense failed to make one last critical stop to hold the lead. The offense could’ve been a bit more aggressive on the final drive to get closer for the field goal instead of settling for a longer kick.
Key Moment
The Bears blocking issues also caused problems on special teams, the line collapsed on that final field goal allowing the Packers to get the block.
Stats That Matter
- Williams looked much better Sunday throwing for 231 yards and running for an additional 70. Even better, he was only sacked three times.
- Chicago ran for 179 yards as a team which kept them in the game.
Bottom Line
The Bears definitely gave a much better effort in this one, unfortunately, it came against a tougher opponent. The good news is Williams had his best performance in weeks. Even with the season going sideways that is definitely a promising development.
