Chicago Bears Score and Recap (Week 5): Bears 36, Panthers 10 – Carolina Gets Moore Than They Bargained For
The Bears were able to take care of business against the Panthers on Sunday afternoon at Soldier Field. Chicago was rolling on both sides of the football and ended up with a blowout victory.
Carolina actually took the lead in the first quarter with Chuba Hubbard broke a 38-yard touchdown run. Young quarterback Caleb Williams answered immediately, hooking up with former Panther D.J. Moore for a nifty 34-yard TD catch to even the score.
The Bears put together a methodical drive in their next possession, eventually paying it off with a short touchdown run by Roschon Johnson early in the second quarter. Jaquan Brisker forced a Tommy Tremble fumble which the home team converted into a D’Andre Swift score and a 21-7 advantage.
Moore continued his revenge game with a second touchdown reception right before the half, this time from 30 yards away to make it 27-7 after a missed extra point. The contest was pretty much decided after that with each team kicking a field goal in the third quarter.
Johnson punched in his second touchdown in the fourth quarter to finish up the scoring with Chicago taking home the 36-10 win. (Box score)
Why the Bears Won
They took full advantage of Carolina’s very bad defense and created turnovers that turned the game into a blowout.
Key Moment
When the Panthers jumped ahead early on a explosive play the Bears could have lost their cool, instead they responded immediately and never looked back from there.
Stats That Matter
- Williams threw for 304 yards and two touchdowns and again did not make any mistakes. He also had several effective scrambles running for 34 yards. He now has two 300 yard passing games, which is two more than Justin Fields had his whole time in Chicago.
- Moore is starting to develop some nice chemistry with his quarterback, the receiver had 105 yards and two touchdowns on Sunday.
- Swift is making his early season struggles seem like an ancient memory with 73 yards on the ground and 47 through the air in this one.
Bottom Line
Caleb Williams is steadily improving every single week as he gets more comfortable in the NFL. Five games is not a huge sample size but he clearly is better than the Bears other recent quarterback draft picks and he should only keep growing. Chicago did not mess around with a bad opponent at home, they crushed them which is a very good sign moving forward.
Next Up
The Bears hop across the pond for a matchup in London against the Jacksonville Jaguars Sunday at 8:30am CT on the NFL Network.
