Virginia McCaskey, matriarch of the Chicago Bears, dies at 102
Virginia Halas McCaskey, the principal owner and matriarch of the Chicago Bears, died at the age of 102.
The team announced her death on social media and its website Thursday. No cause of death or date was given. The Bears have not released a statement on McCaskey’s death as of Thursday morning.
McCaskey was oldest daughter of Bears founder George Halas and inherited team after his death in 1983. Two years later the Bears would win their only Super Bowl.
Together with her late husband, Ed McCaskey, who was the chairman and treasurer of the team, they had 11 children and 40 grandchildren.
George McCaskey, 68, is the current chairman of the Bears. It’s not clear how ownership will be divided after Virginia’s death, though George has remained the most visible and active family member around the team.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
