Watch: Bears Scouts Discuss What Sold Them on 2023 Draft Picks
Ryan Poles and his staff have been very transparent since joining the organization last year. This is a fantastic look at what the Bears loved about their 2023 draft picks. I love that Poles gives his scouts their moments in the spotlight. The jury is still out on Chicago’s front office, but fans have never had this type of access to the team’s scouting department.
ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. gave the Bears a B+ for their 2023 draft. That seems to be the consensus score among most analysts. That said, you have to give Poles an A+ if you include D.J. Moore. Poles turned the No. 1 overall pick into Moore, Darnell Wright, Tyrique Stevenson (after trading up from No. 61), a first-round pick in 2024, a fourth-round in ’24 (by way of trading down in the first round), and a second-round pick in 2025.
Poles was able to take Wright after passing on Jalen Carter and sliding down one spot in a trade with the Eagles. he also fortified the defense in free agency with the additions of Tremaine Edmunds, T.J. Edwards, Andrew Billings, Rasheem Green, and DeMarcus Walker. He then used the draft to give Justin Fields some weapons and protection.
Poles also said earlier this week that he is still seeking another pass rusher in free agency or trade.
This year’s picks, in case you forgot, were:
- R1P10 – Darnell Wright
- R2P53 – Gervon Dexter
- R2P56 – Tyrique Stevenson
- R3P64 – Zacch Pickens
- R4P115 – Roschon Johnson
- R4P133 – Tyler Scott
- R5P148 – Nolan Sewell
- R5P165 – Terell Smith
- R7P218 – Travis Bell
- R7P258 – Kendall Williamson
